Saturday May 8th, 2010 was the season finale of the local Race At The Lakes Series sponsored by Summit Freewheelers. Dan Quinlan, Shawn Adams, Tris Hopkins, Tom Freuh, Brian Batke, Matt Weeks, and Josh Halvax all started the Cat 1/2/3 race. Brian and Dan were off in an early break that looked like it may stick, but eventually was reeled in by the field. With roughly two laps to go eventual race winner, Paul Martin (Panther-Competitive Cyclist) rolled off the front solo while Dan captured the field sprint for 2nd place. In the Women’s field, Erin Quinlan and Samantha Brode (House) raced. Samantha finished 2nd place with Jane Evely Baughman (Team Summa) taking the win in the field sprint. The Carbon Racing Men’s squad finished 2nd place in the Team Points Competition. The Women’s squad also captured 2nd place in the Team Points Competition.
Sunday May 9th, Dan Quinlan, Shawn Adams, and Samantha Brode (House) traveled to Michigan to race in the Cone Azalia venue. Cone Azalia is always a challenge because of the 4 miles of dirt and gravel roads per lap of a 10 mile circuit. Samantha raced in the Women’s 1/2/3 field eventually flatting and finishing 5th. Dan and Shawn raced in the 70 mile Men’s 1/2/3 field against some stiff competition. Dan suffered a flat on the first lap, but managed to get back up to the group and finished 11th. Shawn was the victim of two flat tires, initially getting back into the race but eventually having to DNF with yet another flat tire. Hmmmm…. maybe we need a support vehicle for this venue in the future?
